If you installed iOS 27 Beta or iPadOS 27 Beta through Apple’s Developer Program, you may decide you want to downgrade because of usability or stability issues. Keep reading to learn how it’s done.

Apple’s beta versions of its major software updates can be buggy, especially the early releases. While that isn’t necessarily the case for the latest iOS 27 beta, you may still find apps not working properly, poor battery life, device crashes, and features that don’t do what they’re supposed to. Fortunately, you can restore your iPhone or iPad to the previous version of iOS.

If you made an archived backup before you installed the iOS 27 beta, you can remove the ‌beta and restore the backup. If you don’t have an archived backup that was created before installing the beta, you can still downgrade, but you’ll need to set up your device as new or restore from an older compatible backup. Only an archived backup made before installing the beta can be restored after downgrading.

Also, bear in mind that if you’ve installed watchOS 27 beta on your Apple Watch, you won’t be able to use it with your ‌iPhone‌ once you’ve gone back to iOS 26. And downgrading an Apple Watch to a previous version of watchOS can’t be done manually — if you want to remove ‌watchOS 27 beta, you’ll have to send your watch in to Apple.

How to Downgrade From iOS 27 Beta or iPadOS 27 Beta

Launch Finder on your Mac. On Windows, open the Apple Devices app (or iTunes if you’re using an older setup).

Connect your iPhone or iPad to your computer using a Lightning or USB-C cable.

Put the iPhone into Recovery Mode. There are several ways to do this but the method Apple suggests in its support document is this: for iPhones from iPhone 8 onwards (which is what applies here since iOS 27 doesn’t run on iPhones earlier than iPhone 11), press and quickly release the volume up button, press and quickly release the volume down button and then press and hold the side button until you see the Connect to computer screen.

You’ll be offered an option to update or restore the iPhone. Choose Restore and the iPhone will be wiped and restored to the latest iOS, currently iOS 26.6.

Once it’s done, you can set up your iPhone from scratch, signing in and choosing an iCloud backup to install.

The iOS 27 public beta will still be there if you change your mind.

Apple released the iOS 27 public beta on Monday, July 13, 2026, and the question is whether you should install it on your iPhone.

The Case for Installing iOS 27 public beta

The public beta is a steadier build than the developer betas. Those go to developers, who need to skirt the edges of stability to test their products.

Steadier is not the same as solid. Apple is still adding features and changing them in the iOS 27 betas, and the release of iOS 27 is anticipated for September or October.

If you decide to go ahead, my recommendation is a second iPhone rather than the one you rely on. Compatibility goes back as far as the iPhone 11, so an older model you stopped using can be pressed into service for this. And back up your data first, as always.

Is iOS 27 stable?

Apple sets out its own caution about pre-release software on the Apple Beta Software Program page. Here is what it says:

The Apple Beta Software Program lets users try out pre-release software. The feedback you provide on quality and usability helps us identify issues, fix them, and make Apple software even better. Please note that since the beta software has not yet been commercially released by Apple, it may contain errors or inaccuracies and may not function as well as commercially released software. Be sure to back up your iPhone or iPad and your Mac using Time Machine before installing beta software.

Expect Bugs

Bugs at this stage are the point. Software in development is expected to have them, and this is the window when they need to surface, so developers can catch them and Apple can fix them before the final release.

With more testers involved, odd interactions turn up across a much larger range of iPhones and third-party apps.

Third-party app compatibility is the one thing I always call out with every iOS public beta update. Checking somewhere like Reddit is a good way to find out whether other people have already run your must-have apps on the iOS 27 beta.

NerdsModo’s Take

In my testing, this is the most stable iOS beta in a very long time. Stability and platform improvements are one of the tentpoles of the update, and that is apparent even in iOS 27’s current beta form.

Things feel faster and more reliable. There are a ton of quality-of-life improvements to be had as well.

I think iOS 27 is stable enough as it stands, and I would recommend it to most iPhone users. There is also a real reason to want to try it this year: the new Siri is really good.

For all of that, it is still a beta, so you should expect bugs and glitches, and features might change between now and the release to everyone this fall.

Are you installing the iOS 27 public beta? Tell us in the comments which features you are most excited to try.
